His book Das Integrationsparadox - Why Successful Integration Leads to More Conflicts, published in 2018 , was in the bestseller and best-seller lists for several weeks. El-Mafaalani shows that open societies are exposed to different counter-movements, which he locates in xenophobic and nationalist as well as in religious fundamentalist movements. He sees these closing tendencies as unexpected side effects of developments in social openness, which are generally positive, and an increasingly integrated and integrative society. Participation in society is increasing today at different levels and for different groups, which makes conflicts of distribution , interests and affiliation more probable, resulting in renegotiations and an acceleration of social change . Accordingly, he calls for a constructive culture of debate to be understood as the dominant culture . In 2020 the book Mythos Bildung was published , in which El-Mafaalani analyzes the problems and paradoxical effects of the education system and its dynamics and inertia from different perspectives.
