Albalonga
Albalonga is a white wine variety. It is a new breed from a cross between Rieslaner and Müller-Thurgau , which was bred in 1951 by Hans Breider at the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture in Veitshöchheim . Accordingly, the variety is mainly grown in Franconia , but there are also smaller occurrences in Rheinhessen and the Palatinate . In 2012, the earlier assumption that the father variety was the Silvaner was refuted by DNA analysis. In 1988 the total area planted with Albalonga in Germany was 34 hectares , in 2001 only 13 hectares. Since then the population has been stable and in 2007 was 14 hectares.
The very rot-prone Albalonga can produce strong selections in good years .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics
In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:
- The shoot tip is open. She is lightly hairy woolly.
- The medium-sized leaves are barely lobed and only slightly cupped (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is open in a U-shape. The blade is bluntly serrated.
- The cylindrical grape is medium-sized, shouldered and dense berries. The slightly cylindrical berries are small to medium-sized and green-yellow in color.
Albalonga ripens almost 20 days after the Gutedel . It is therefore considered to ripen late (a few days after Müller-Thurgau ). The late shoot protects them from the risk of late frost. The vigorous variety produces consistently high yields. The winter frost fest is moderately good. Must weight and acid values (→ acidity (wine) ) are comparatively high.
Albalonga is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
