history

The former logo of Albanian Airlines

The company was founded in 1992 as a joint venture between Tyrolean Airways and the Albanian state company Albtransport , which also operated Tirana Airport. The new establishment operated at that time with a single Ilyushin Il-18 , which provided the government. A De Havilland DHC-8-100 from Tyrolean was added as a modern type . After the Austrian investor left, the airline was restructured in 1996 with a Kuwaiti partner. This got an Airbus A320-200 from the Egyptian Shorouk Air . But the workload left a lot to be desired and so another Kuwaiti financial injection was necessary. In addition, the focus was again on Russian aircraft types, which were provided by the Bulgarian Hemus Air and its crew.

In 2001, the fleet consisted of four Tupolew Tu-134s , which were used to fly from Tirana to Bologna , Frankfurt , Istanbul , Pristina , Rome and Zurich . In July 2001 Albanian Airlines acquired their first BAe 146-200 , as many airports with the loud Tupolews were no longer allowed to be served. In 2003 and 2004 another BAe 146-100 and BAe 146-300 were purchased, all of which are operated by Hemus Air. As of 2008, a former MD-82 was leased from American Airlines .

In summer 2009 Albanian Airlines was sold to the EVSEN Group from Azerbaijan . The airline, which was never really able to gain a foothold on its home market and had experienced serious competition from new Albanian airlines, then subjected this to a fundamental restructuring and modernization. The airline received a new logo, new planes should join the fleet and from November 2009 new destinations in Western Europe, Italy and the United Arab Emirates should be served.

On June 20, 2011, the owner of the EVSEN Group, Ali Evsen, was arrested in Spain on suspicion of money laundering together with Hussein Salem , a close confidante of the former Egyptian President Husni Mubarak . In November 2011, the Albanian aviation authority revoked the license of Albanian Airlines until further notice due to the poor technical condition of the aircraft and the resulting safety concerns .

Destinations

Albanian Airlines last flew from Tirana to Italy as well as to London and Istanbul .
