The Albatros is a former German passenger and freight - steamer .

history

The Albatros was built in 1912 by Meyer Werft in Papenburg . The built-in compound steam engine had 260 hp and gave the steamer a service speed of 10 knots . The buyer of the 214 GRT ship was the “Vereinigte Flensburg-Ekensunder & Sonderburger Dampfschiffs-Gesellschaft” in Flensburg .

In the following years the ship served to supply the towns on the Flensburg Fjord . It was used at times as a cattle truck.

During World War I , the Albatros was used by the Imperial Navy from April 3, 1916 to December 6, 1918. She was assigned to the port protection flotilla / 3rd half flotilla in Kiel on July 12, 1916 as H 76. From August 15, 1916, she was first used as the H 86 as a tender and later under various names in the Danzig Bay . After the war, the ship was again used to supply the towns on the Flensburg Fjord.

In 1935, Förde-Reederei GmbH took over the passenger activities of the "United Flensburg-Ekensunder & Sonderburger Dampfschiffs-Gesellschaft" and its steamers Alexandra , Habicht and Albatros . After a conversion in 1938, the ship only had 188 GRT / 79 NRT.

During the Second World War , the ship was requisitioned by the German Navy on May 8, 1943 and was first used as a traffic steamer from Gotenhafen to the Hexengrund torpedo weapon area in the Danzig Bay . In January 1945, when the Red Army was advancing towards Königsberg in East Prussia , the Albatros managed to reach Stralsund across the Baltic Sea from Pillau with 500 female naval assistants on board as part of the “ Rescue by Sea ” operation . There she took 200 refugees on board, left the port on April 30, 1945 and arrived in Kiel unharmed.

In the post-war period, the Albatros was in service until 1969. From 1951 to 1953 she drove only as a cattle steamer, in the following years she sailed the route Flensburg - Solitüde - Glücksburg in summer and with special trips to the lightship Flensburg lying in the Geltinger Bucht .

The ship, which has since been decommissioned, was towed into the port of Damp on September 14, 1971 and set up there next to the port basin. There the ship serves as the maritime flagship of the Baltic Sea resort of Damp.

Albatros Memorial Site - rescue by sea

The Albatros as a geological natural history museum (2015)

In 1980, the German Navy Federation became aware of the ship, as they were looking for a site that could serve as a memorial for refugees from the war and a museum for posterity.

For this purpose, the Albatros Memorial Site Board of Trustees was founded on March 19, 1981 . The inauguration of the memorial took place on May 28, 1983. To do this, the entire hull had to be cleared out; the entrance was through a door cut into the hull. The board of trustees could not decide to completely preserve the ship and the outer shell did not correspond in any way to the previous color scheme.

Until 1999, the ship housed this museum with display boards, books, certificates, postcards, interviews with contemporary witnesses (video recordings) and pictures. The exhibition was closed in 2000 due to insufficient visitor numbers.

In the following years there was a geological natural history museum in the ship, which is now closed.

The ship now serves as a viewing platform for the German Life Saving Society . In addition, the bow of the ship is used by KEY ZONE for a live escape game.
