The Albemarle Island class is a refrigerated ship type built in five units from 1992 to 1994 .

details

The design by the Danish Danyard shipyard in Frederikshavn was created for the banana export group Grupo Noboa in Ecuador . The ships were built in five units from 1992 to 1994. The keel of the type ship , the Albemarle Island , was stretched on October 12, 1992. After the completion of this ship on July 1, 1993, the four sister ships were delivered over the next eight months. The name of each ship consists of a compound name with "Island" appended. The technical ship management was taken over by Trireme Vessel Management in Antwerp , the operational use by the Ecuadorian Line in Miami .

The five ships have deckhouses arranged aft and four holds with a volume of around 17,774 m³. The cooling system operated with ammonia as the coolant was considered an environmentally friendly alternative to the previously common refrigerants during construction. In addition, the cooling system is designed for operation with a controlled atmosphere (CA).

There are additional parking spaces for refrigerated containers and seven hydraulic deck cranes on deck . The three cranes arranged in the middle lift 40 tons each, the four cranes attached to the starboard each have 10 tons lifting power. The carrying capacity of the ships is around 14,000 tons.

It is propelled by a B&W two - stroke diesel engine (type: 8S60MC) built by Mitsui with an output of 16,320  kW , which enables a speed of 21.5  knots . There are four MAN-B&W auxiliary diesels (type: 8L28 / 32H) with 1680 kW each for energy supply. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .

The Duncan Iceland was stopped south and on 15 February 2020 from Gedser by the Danish police brought to Kalundborg. The crew is suspected of smuggling over 100 kg of cocaine. The ship was arrested and all 27 crew members were taken into custody.
