Life

Alberich Heidmann was born on December 27, 1808 in house no. 274 in the Bohemian mountain town of Sankt Joachimsthal as the legitimate son of the businessman Josef Heidmann and his wife Eva. Elster was born and christened Johann Heidmann. He attended the grammar school in Eger and entered the Cistercian monastery Lilienfeld on October 3, 1828, where he took the religious name Alberich. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the University of Prague , the University of Vienna and the Heiligenkreuz University of Applied Sciences . On October 9, 1831, he made his profession and on July 31, 1832, Bishop Jakob Frint of St. Pölten ordained him as a priest. He initially worked as a chaplain in Lilienfeld and as a pastor in Unterdürnbach , from 1836 to 1854 as a forester and road construction inspector. As such, he managed the construction of Mariazellerstraße, which was carried out from 1838 to 1847. From 1839 to 1853 he also held an important economic office at Lilienfeld Monastery as a creator. Between 1853 and his appointment as abbot of Lilienfeld he was pastor in Unterretzbach . On 24 April 1862 he chose his confreres from Lilienfeld to their abbot. Three days later he was Ignaz Feigerle benediziert .

Under Abbot Alberich, many of the monastery buildings were not only renovated, but also partially gothicized. The architect Domenico Avanzo restored the cloister of Lilienfeld Abbey (1873) and the chapter house (1875) with neo-Gothic changes. The fountain house was built in neo-Gothic style (1886). In addition, colored glass windows for the chapter house, cloister and fountain house were purchased. Avanzo's plans for a comprehensive re-Gothicization of the collegiate basilica did not materialize. Abbot Alberich had the abbots' vault erected at the Lilienfeld city cemetery. In many parishes of the Lilienfeld Monastery he had restorations or additions and new constructions of churches and parsonages carried out. Abbot Alberich was assistant to the Austro-Hungarian Cistercian Congregation from 1875 to 1897. From 1866 to 1867 he was a member of the state parliament. He was considered a very frugal person who was characterized by a very friendly and peaceful nature. He was in excellent health throughout his life. Only a few months before his death did a sharp decline in strength set in. He died almost 90 years old. His body was buried in the abbot's vault at the city cemetery of Lilienfeld.
