Albert Dietrich (Arabist)

Albert Dietrich (born November 2, 1912 in Hamburg , † December 25, 2015 in Göttingen ) was a German Arabist .

Life

Albert Dietrich studied Arabic and oriental studies at the University of Hamburg and was at 1937 Arthur Schaade and Rudolf Strothmann with a dissertation on the Arabic Papyri at the Hamburg University Library doctorate . On May 1, 1937, he became a member of the NSDAP ( membership number 4,790,773). In the same year he became a member of the DMG .

After serving in the Second World War , he went to Heidelberg University and completed his habilitation there in 1949. In 1956, he was appointed adjunct professor and worked as a consultant in the Istanbul department of the German Archaeological Institute . In 1959 he followed a call from the University of Göttingen to the chair of Arabic and Islamic Studies, which he held until his retirement in 1981. He was succeeded by Tilman Nagel .

Dietrich had been a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences since 1961 and a foreign member of the Accademia dei Lincei since 1974 . In September 2012 he was made an honorary member of the European Association of Arabists and Islamic Scholars (UEAI).

Albert Dietrich was with Gertrud geb. Bendixen (1918–2014) married. The couple had four sons. He died on December 25, 2015 in Göttingen.
