Albert Granger Harkness
Albert Granger Harkness (born November 19, 1856 in Providence , Rhode Island , † January 29, 1923 ibid) was an American classical philologist .
Life
Albert Granger Harkness was the son of the classical philologist Albert Harkness (1822-1907) and his wife Maria Aldrich Smith Harkness. His father was Professor of Greek Language and Literature at Brown University from 1855 to 1892 .
The son's career corresponded in many respects to that of his father: Albert Granger Harkness, like his father, studied classical philology at Brown University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1879 (as one of the best in his class). He then taught Latin and Greek for a year at the Peddie Institute in Hightstown, New Jersey . From 1880 Harkness (like his father) undertook a study and educational trip to Europe lasting several years and continued his studies at the universities in Leipzig and Bonn . During this time, his alma mater awarded him a master's degree in 1882 .
In 1883, Harkness accepted a position at the University of Madison , where he was professor of Latin and German . In 1889 he moved to Brown University as Associate Professor of Latin , where his father also taught. In 1893 he was appointed professor of Roman language and literature there. In 1902/03 he was director of the American School of Classical Studies in Rome . In 1909 Colgate University awarded him an honorary doctorate (LL. D.). He died on January 23, 1923, after giving his last lecture on January 6, 1923.
Harkness published only a few writings, mainly essays in the journals Classical Philology , American Journal of Philology and in the Transactions and Proceedings of the American Philological Association , of which he was a Life Member from 1896. In his studies he dealt with Roman metrics and aspects of Roman everyday life.
