The 1959 season of the Primera División was the 56th season (the 28th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .
The Primera División consisted of ten clubs in the championship season of 1959, whose teams met twice in a total of 90 championship games. There were 18 game days. The championship won the Club Atlético Peñarol . The "Aurinegros" prevailed in the championship final on March 20, 1960 with a 2-0 win against Nacional Montevideo after the two clubs had to share the lead in the year-end table with equal points. As bottom of the table, Danubio FC rose from the Primera División to the Segunda División . The top scorer was Víctor Guaglianone with 13 goals .
