Albert Stunkard

Albert J. ("Mickey") Stunkard (born February 7, 1922 in Manhattan , New York City , New York - † July 12, 2014 in Bryn Mawr , Pennsylvania ) was an American psychiatrist . He is considered to be the first to describe the binge eating disorder and night eating syndrome .

Life

Albert Stunkard was born the son of the biologist Horace Stunkard . He studied medicine at Yale University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1943 . 1945 doctorate at Columbia University to MD . He then worked as a doctor in the US Army in Japan . From 1973 to 1977 he was director of the psychiatric department at Stanford University . However, he spent most of his career as a psychiatrist and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania . He died of pneumonia in his home on July 12, 2014 . He is considered one of the most famous pioneers in obesity research .
