Albert Neumaier (born May 24, 1912 in Hofstetten ; † April 14, 1983 in Karlsruhe ) was a German pastor and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Albert Neumaier grew up in Hofstetten and attended the Friedrich-Gymnasium Freiburg . After graduating from high school, he studied theology . He came to Rotenfels through various vicar posts , where he acted as a representative for a sickly pastor. When the Schirmeck-Vorbruck security camp was largely relocated to Rotenfels on August 25, 1944 , and thus continued to exist as the Rotenfels security camp , he began to establish contacts with the camp management. He persuaded girls from his community to phone the camp management to establish contact. Negotiations began with camp commandant Robert Wünsch regarding the release of some prisoners. During his visits, Neumaier repeatedly smuggled food, clothing, but also hosts and mass wine into the warehouse.

Wünsch finally influenced his superiors in Baden-Baden and so most of the prisoners were released at Easter 1945. However, around 170 prisoners remained in custody and were evacuated up the murgup towards Freudenstadt .

After the Second World War he helped rebuild the city and set up a Caritas secretariat . On April 30, 1950, Neumaier was promoted to pastor and continued to work in Rotenfels until his death on April 14, 1983, where he made a special contribution to the children's and youth groups.

Honors

In 1973 Neumaier was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his life-threatening commitment to the prisoners . The diocese of Strasbourg also awarded him the “Médaille de la reconnaissance diocésaine”. According to a dean's report from 1961, Neumaier was at times "the most popular man in the Murg Valley".
