He traveled to numerous countries in Europe and overseas. He resided on a beach in Israel for a year . In the days of the hippies he lived with like-minded people in a shared apartment in Montreal . Even then, he was making a living doing odd jobs. In Zurich he came into conflict with the police because he took part in squatting and violated the Narcotics Act - he smoked hashish and confessed to it. His parents found out about it through newspapers and subsequently disinherited him. Much later, he found peace with them.

Nufer gives the job title “Strassenwischer”, “Alt Strassenwischer” or “Agricultural and casual workers”. As such, he found a part-time job with the city of St. Gallen during the boom . He is laughed at by many for his outward appearance and lifestyle, but he is still respected for his political commitment. He has long, light brown hair and a long beard. He lives in poverty without a permanent job or place of residence - on average he was granted three working days per week until his early retirement. According to his own statement, he chose this lifestyle out of conviction and did jobs such as clearing snow, mopping the street, making hay or cutting wood for food and lodging. He could also be found in a wine shop, a family household or in a carpenter's workshop. His apartment was a non-isolated attic on Burgstrasse. He doesn't have a television, computer, or phone. He read at least three newspapers a day - in preparation for the upcoming political meetings. Later he moved to a one-room attic apartment on Kesselhaldenstrasse. There, too, he moved out and helped a friend in Malaysia with the clean-up work that became necessary as a result of the winter storms there. Since his return he has been accommodated by a farmer friend in Teufen . At the end of November 2009 he announced his resignation from the Grand Council. He intended to hibernate in Malaysia .
