Richard Fuck

Richard Friedrich Fick (born February 7, 1867 in Schwartau , † December 18, 1944 in Göttingen ) was a German librarian and Indologist .

Life

Richard Fick, the son of the businessman Adolf Fick and his wife Maria, b. Loewe, after graduating from high school (1885), studied Indology , German , English and philosophy in Kiel . In Kiel he became a member of the country team Cimbria, the later Slesvico-Holsatia (today in the CC ), of which he was later chairman. As early as 1886 he started working for the university library. Supported by Richard Pischel and Hermann Jakobi , he achieved his doctorate in 1888. After eleven years in the service of the Kiel University Library, he moved to the Royal Library of Berlin in 1897 , where he became the head librarian from 1904 and headed the information office of the German libraries as chief librarian from 1905 . During this time he brought out an illustrated cultural-historical representation of the university and student system with Auf Germany's high schools . In 1900 he married Emma Petow (* 1868) in Berlin; the marriage remained childless. During the First World War , Fick served as a captain and battalion commander in the 2nd Sailor Regiment in Flanders, the story of which he later published. In 1916 he became department director of the Royal Library. Ficks merits in Berlin are manifested in the general journal directory, which was created under his leadership and appeared in 1914, as well as in the general catalog of the Prussian libraries , the manuscript of which was largely completed under him.

From 1921 until his retirement in 1932, Fick was head of the Göttingen University Library . Here he was appointed honorary professor in 1923 and in 1930 he was accepted into the library commission of the Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft . From 1928 to 1932 he was chairman of the Association of German Librarians .

Richard Fick is known as a theorist and practitioner of cataloging as well as an indologist . His most important publication in this field is the volume published by F. Haeseler in Kiel in 1897, The social structure in northeastern India in the time of Buddha. With particular reference to the case question - primarily due to the Jataka shown that in 1920 by Shishir Kumar Maitra was translated into English.
