Albert Schoenberger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albert Schönberger (born May 12, 1949 in Augsburg ) is a German organist and church musician . From 1985 to 2010 he was cathedral organist at the High Cathedral in Mainz.

Life

Albert Schönberger spent his childhood and youth in Münster am Lech . Here he started playing the organ. He studied at the church music school in Regensburg , where he received the B-exam and baccalaureate for organ, and at the State University of Music and Munich , where he graduated as a church musician. In 1981 he became cathedral organist in Mainz and lecturer at the Episcopal Institute for Church Music in Mainz ; 1983 also lecturer for artistic organ playing and organ improvisation at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. After his predecessor Monsignore Heino Schneider retired in 1985, Bishop Karl Lehmann appointed him on March 1st as the new cathedral organist at Mainz Cathedral . In 1994 he gave up teaching at the university. On April 25, 2010, Schönberger retired with a festive vespers. In 2011 he received the Peter Cornelius plaque from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for his services in the field of music care and music creation .

In addition to his focus on improvisation , Schönberger has recently been involved in composing. His works for organ, soprano & organ as well as mixed choir are well received. In particular, oratorios for soloists, strings, wind instruments, organ and speaker stand out from his compositions. He understands his music as a "fade-in", with which textual statements that form the background for his music experience a special underline or emphasis and emphasis. His baptismal hymn Bless this child as well as the Mainz Bible chants he invented also attract a lot of attention. His first cantata on the Advent song O komm, o komm Emanuel , for speaker / baritone, soprano, wind quintet, 2 trumpet solos and organ was premiered on November 29, 2005 in Mainz Cathedral.

Schönberger understands his music as a sound image that should take the listener with him when working out a thought or topic. His concept of music as an "extension of the musical-liturgical-theological thought", which he presents in concerts, organ matinees and organ evenings, has become known far beyond the Mainz diocese. In addition, he was able to make a name for himself on an international level through concerts and masterclasses in specialist circles.

Since the conception of the Mainz cathedral organ and the difficult acoustics of the cathedral did not favor baroque organ literature, for example by Johann Sebastian Bach , the focus during his activity as Mainz cathedral organist was more on works of the Romantic, Modern and Free Improvisation periods.
