Albert W. Bally (* 21st April 1925 in The Hague , † thirtieth July 2019 in Houston , Texas ) was a Dutch - American geophysicist and geologist .

Bally went to school in Switzerland and studied at the University of Zurich , where he received his doctorate in geology in 1952. As a post-graduate student , he was at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geophysical Observatory . From 1954 he worked at Shell as a petroleum geologist, where he stayed until his retirement in 1981. First he worked for Shell Canada in Alberta in the Canadian Rocky Mountains (where he worked out in a classic paper in 1966 that the folding dynamics only affected a relatively thin sedimentary surface layer) and from 1966 as head of geological research for the Shell Bellaire Research and Development Laboratory in Houston , where he turned to the Gulf of Mexico in particular (where he particularly recognized the role of salt tectonics for oil deposits). In 1968 he became chief geologist of Shell Oil's US division, where he became an exploration consultant in 1976 and a senior exploration consultant in 1980. After he retired from Shell, he became a professor of geology at Rice University .

As a petroleum geologist, he played a pioneering role in the integration of reflection seismology methods with stratigraphic and structural geological research. He arranged for the publication of these research results (some of which were sensitive proprietary information from Shell) in a series of publicly accessible geological publications and atlases.

Bally was one of the initiators of the US national Edge Project for seismic exploration of the continental margins. In 1987 he received the Gustav Steinmann Medal . In 1998 he received the Career Contribution Award from the Structural Geology and Tectonics Division of the Geological Society of America , the Sidney Powers Medal from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the William Smith Medal from the Geological Society of London .

In 1988 he was Centennial President of the Geological Society of America.
