Alberto Leopoldo Fajardo Klappenbach (born October 19, 1956 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan diplomat who has been ambassador to Santiago de Chile since June 25, 2018 .

Life

From 1973 to 1977 he studied Bachelor of Political Science at Rice University (Houston, Texas, USA) from 1978 to 1981 he studied law and social sciences at the University of the Republic , where he received his doctorate in diplomacy. From 1983 to 1986 he completed a master's degree in economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science .

In 1978 he joined the foreign service and became third class legation secretary. From 1982 to 1986 he was first class delegation secretary in London and was a representative at the International Maritime Organization . From 1986 to 1988 he headed the Middle East department . From 1989 to 1991 he headed the multilaterality department and was a representative at Instituto Antártico Uruguayo . From 1991 to 1996 he had exequatur as consul general in Los Angeles , California. From 1998 to 2001 he headed the department for foreign trade planning, export promotion and participated in conferences in Lisbon, Paris, Valencia and Chicago.

From 2001 to 2006 he was ambassador to Moscow and was simultaneously accredited in Yerevan ( Armenia ), Kiev ( Ukraine ) and Astana (since 2019 Nur-Sultan) ( Kazakhstan ).

From 2006 to 2008 he headed the Economic Integration Department . His duties included the external relations of Mercosur , for example he negotiated the Tratado de Libre Comercio entre el Estado de Israel y el MERCOSUR (Mercosur Israel Free Trade Agreement), which was signed in Jerusalem from November 20 to 23, 2006 .

From 2008 to 2013 he was ambassador to Canberra and was simultaneously accredited in Wellington ( New Zealand ) and Dili ( East Timor ).

In 2014 he headed the Multilaterality Department . From 2015 to 2017 he headed the Asia, Africa and Oceania department and was the representative of the Foreign Ministry at Instituto Antártico Uruguayo . On December 18, 2017, Tabaré Vázquez appointed him ambassador to Caracas . The vote on this appointment never came on the agenda of the Cámara de Senadores . On July 3, 2018, the senators approved an appointment of June 25, 2018 as ambassador to Santiago de Chile.
