Alberto Poli (born May 17, 1945 in Colzate , † December 6, 2008 in Dinard ) was an Italian football player and coach , who completed his entire career in France and took French citizenship in 1974.

Player career

Poli came to Lorraine , France , with his parents when he was two years old , where he started playing football for a club from Audun-le-Tiche . When his coach there was appointed sports director of the first division club SCO Angers in 1965 , he took the then 20-year-old footballer with him. The Italian was a direct member of the professional squad at Angers and established himself as a regular in midfield alongside Jean-Marc Guillou during his first year . After he had to accept relegation to the second division in 1968, he contributed thirteen goals in the 1968/69 season, which corresponds to his best yield of a season, to the second division championship and the associated promotion. He kept his regular place over the years and ran in 1972 for the first time in the UEFA Cup .

In 1974 there was a move to the Stade Rennes in the room, but Poli ultimately decided on Paris Saint-Germain . In Paris he was a regular in a well-staffed team that was still in a relegation battle despite everything. At the same time he acquired French citizenship, even if he was denied a possible appointment to the national team of the country. He turned his back on the capital city club in 1975 and signed with the Stade Rennes, which had previously courted him. In the second division, he acted on the side of Houssaine Anafal and achieved promotion, but left the club and preferred to move to the second-rate Rouen FC . For the second time in a row Poli succeeded in promotion to the first division, after which, however, he lost his regular place; he also had to accept relegation with Rouen as bottom of the table. At the age of 33 he decided in 1978 to end his professional career after 297 first division games with 24 goals and 103 second division games with 15 goals.

Coaching career

Immediately after the end of his career, Poli began working as a player - coach in 1978 for an amateur club from Digne-les-Bains and remained loyal to the club as a coach until 1987 after he had finally given up playing in 1982. He then went to Dinan , where he was the city's sports officer and mainly dealt with youth work. He lived in retirement from 2003 until he passed away in 2008.
