Alexander Gaheis

Alexander Gaheis (born February 3, 1869 in Hainburg an der Donau , † November 17, 1942 in Vienna ) was an Austrian classical philologist and archaeologist .

Gaheis studied Classical Philology, Archeology and Ancient History at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate on February 17, 1894. phil. received his doctorate . In 1896 he passed the teaching examination in Greek, Latin and German and then worked as an assistant teacher at a Viennese grammar school. In 1898 and 1899 he was given leave of absence for research trips to Asia Minor .

From 1899 to 1909 Gaheis taught as a high school professor in Trieste ; then he moved to Vienna to the grammar school in the XIII. District . In addition to school service, he continued to do historical, epigraphic and archaeological studies. He was particularly committed to the archaeological development of Austrian local history. In 1919 he rearranged the holdings of the Archaeological Museum in Enns . From 1920 to 1933 he led the excavations of the Roman city of Lauriacum . In addition, Gaheis brought the results of his research closer to a larger audience in class, through guided tours, lectures and publications. In 1925 he retired as a teacher, but continued to do research.

In addition to the above-mentioned activities, Gaheis was particularly known in specialist circles as an epigraphist . He published collections of inscriptions and supported Eugen Bormann with the edition of the XI. Volume of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL) and written personal articles for the real encyclopedia of classical antiquity (RE). Gaheis was a corresponding member of the Austrian (1911) and the German Archaeological Institute (1926).
