Albrecht Behmel (2012)

Albrecht Behmel (born March 24, 1971 ) is a German painter , historian and writer .

Life

Behmel grew up in Baden-Württemberg and Stuttgart . He studied philosophy and history in Heidelberg with Volker Sellin and Klaus von Beyme and at the Humboldt University in Berlin with Herbert Schnädelbach . Today he is the author of non-fiction books and novels on topics from antiquity and contemporary history . He lives in Berlin and writes, sometimes under a pseudonym, for film , TV, print and radio .

In 2008 , Behmel founded FilmforumPRO , a network for film and media professionals from Berlin and Brandenburg , originally Berlin Filmforum , with regular specialist events on current film culture in Germany. Around 250 industry insiders meet once a month in the Homebase Lounge on Potsdamer Platz , in Soho House Berlin or in regional offices.

Abstraction

Between 2012 and 2014, Behmel developed a series of paintings entitled The Magic of Swarms , a painting technique that stands between figurative and abstract painting by combining the concrete outlines of real figures such as leaves, animals and people into abstract tissues and swarms. The dissolution of pictorial forms into abstract sub-forms can always be traced back to concrete overall forms. This style, which has origins in the design of church windows by Adolf Hölzel , Piet Mondrian and Arcimboldo , is what Behmel calls "abstraction".

Charity

Behmel supports international charities, including the Al Madad Foundation, London, which sends mobile classrooms by bus to remote mountain villages in Lebanon and Syria to combat youth illiteracy, and Evelina London Children's Hospital, Westminster, which uses art as a therapeutic tool for patients and their families Deploy relatives and Dolphin Aid eV Düsseldorf.

Content and style

In his journalistic contributions, Behmel represents classically liberal, humanist, pacifist and sometimes anarchist values. Dealing with ideologies and authorities in the history of ideas is a central theme of his contemporary history. In works of fiction he deals with topics such as urbanity; Identity and the pitfalls of human communication . In many passages, dialects and individual jargons appear in their contrast to more traditional forms of standard German . Frequently recurring motifs are: horses , classical country music , Berlin , Scotland, Ireland , philosophy , Greco-Roman antiquity , high-tech and mythology.
