Albert

Albrecht von Hoya (also Albert ) († April 25, 1473 in Petershagen ) was Bishop of Minden from 1436 until his death in 1473 and administrator of the Diocese of Osnabrück from 1450 to 1454 .

origin

Albrecht came from the Counts of Hoya , some of whom were Bishop of Minden before Albrecht. His father was Count Erich von Hoya († 1426). His mother was Helene, born in Braunschweig-Lüneburg . His brothers Otto and Erich were administrators of Bremen and Osnabrück, respectively. His paternal uncles Johann and Otto were also bishops. His predecessor in Minden was Albrecht's uncle.

education

In 1418 he enrolled at the University of Erfurt , where he was rector for the 1420 summer semester . Albert von Hoya was provost of Bremen , canon at Hildesheim Cathedral and archdeacon of Friesland and Emsland .

Activity as bishop

Albrecht was appointed coadjutor of Bishop Wulbrand in 1420 . After his death he was confirmed on December 23, 1436 Bishop of Minden and on February 18, 1437 by Pope Eugene IV . Only after his election as bishop elect he was ordained a priest in April 1437 and received the full episcopal dignity with his episcopal ordination in May 1437. His reign of about 36 years in the bishopric of Minden and over the diocese of Minden means an almost incomparably long period of time for the Minden bishops. This is all the more true when one takes into account that Albrecht was coadjutor bishop in Minden for about 16 years earlier. Only the second Minden Bishop Hardward , who officiated from 813 to 853, could look back on an even longer period as a bishop .

Like Brother Erich, Albrecht was previously elected Bishop of Osnabrück in 1449 or 1450 . He held this office until 1454. However, because the Pope did not confirm him in Osnabrück, the Bishop-Elekt Albrecht only remained administrator in the Diocese of Osnabrück .

Albrecht was buried in Minden Cathedral .
