Erich I. von Hoya (* 1370 , † 1426 ) was the ruling Count of Hoya (Upper County) from 1377 to 1426 .

Erich was the son of Count Johann II von Hoya and Helene von Sachsen-Lauenburg , daughter of Duke Erich I von Sachsen-Lauenburg . In 1390 Erich married Helene von Braunschweig-Lüneburg , daughter of Duke Magnus II. Torquatus . Six offspring resulted from the marriage:

Erich's brother Johann was bishop of Paderborn from 1394–1399 and bishop of Hildesheim from 1399–1424 . His brother Otto was bishop of Münster from 1392–1424 and also administrator of the Osnabrück diocese from 1410–1424 .

Live and act

Erich extended the territory of County Hoya to the south towards the diocese of Minden. He built Diepenau Castle in 1383 , which was shortly afterwards destroyed by the Minden bishop. At the same time, it also destroyed Flecken and Uchte Castle . Erich then destroyed the fishermen's suburb of Minden, gained the upper hand and rebuilt Diepenau and Uchte. During his reign, he continued to expand the county through numerous goods purchases.
