Alcide Berloffa (* July 23, 1922 in Sardagna near Trento ; † February 25, 2011 in Bolzano ) was an Italian politician who played a key role in establishing and shaping the autonomy of South Tyrol .

Life

Berloffa was born on July 23, 1922 in Sardagna, but moved with his family to Bozen in 1926 and grew up there in the Rentsch district . In 1948 he was elected to the Bolzano municipal council on the list of Democrazia Cristiana , of which he was a member until 1957. From 1953 to 1968 and from 1972 to 1976 he was a member of his party in the Camera dei deputati , one of the two Italian chambers of parliament. Berloffa played a key role in establishing and shaping the autonomy of South Tyrol : from 1961 to 1964 he was a member of the Commission of the Nineteen , which worked out the so-called South Tyrol Package ; from 1968 to 1994 his close confidante Aldo Moros was an expert and advisor in the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers for issues relating to South Tyrol; From 1972 to 1994 he acted as chairman of the six and twelve commissions , which draw up the implementing provisions for the further development of autonomy. From 1977 to 1994 he was a member of the Italian Council of State .

Berloffa initially experienced clear rejection from parts of the Italian-speaking population of South Tyrol because of his autonomy-friendly attitude. However, he was later honored as the “Italian father” of South Tyrolean autonomy - in analogy to the negotiator of the German-speaking South Tyroleans, his long-time friend Silvius Magnago . He was the first Italian-speaking South Tyrolean to receive the Decoration of Honor of the State of Tyrol , and in 2001 he was awarded the Bishop Joseph Gargitter Prize. Berloffa was a member of the founding council from 1998 to 2002 and vice president of the university council of the Free University of Bozen from 2002 to 2006 . After suffering from senile dementia in the last few years of his life, he died on February 25, 2011 in the Bolzano Marienklinik.

In 2012, Berloffa's archives were handed over to the South Tyrolean Provincial Archives by his heirs for a period of 20 years.
