Joseph Gargitter (born January 27, 1917 in Lüsen , South Tyrol , †  July 17, 1991 in Bozen ) was bishop of the diocese of Bozen-Brixen .

Life

Gargitter received his school education from 1929 to 1934 at the Vinzentinum and from 1934 to 1936 at the Italian state school in Brixen . From 1936 to 1944 Joseph Gargitter lived in the Germanikum in Rome and studied at the Papal Gregorian University .

Gargitter was ordained a priest in Rome on October 25, 1942 . In 1950 Gargitter became a professor of dogmatics at the seminary in Bressanone . Pope Pius XII appointed him Bishop of Brixen in 1952 . The episcopal ordination on May 18, 1952, was donated to him by Adeodato Giovanni Cardinal Piazza OCD, Secretary of the Consistorial Congregation . Co- consecrators were the auxiliary bishop of Trent Oreste Rauzi and the vicar apostolic of Fort Victoria / Zimbabwe Aloysius Haene . In 1961 he was also by Pope John XXIII. appointed Apostolic Administrator of Trent ; the office ended in 1963 with the appointment of Alessandro Maria Gottardi as the new Archbishop of Trento. During his term of office in 1964, the transition from the old diocese of Brixen to the new diocese of Bozen-Brixen fell. His resignation for health reasons ( Parkinson's ) was granted by Pope John Paul II in 1986.

After his death, Gargitter was buried in Brixen Cathedral. He is the namesake of the Bischof Joseph Gargitter Prize.
