Aloysius Haene

Aloysius Haene SMB (also: Alois Häne ; * August 6, 1910 in Kirchberg ; † February 19, 1999 in Driefontein , Masvingo ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Gwelo (since 1982 Gweru ) in Zimbabwe .

Life

Haene was ordained a priest on April 2, 1939 for the Bethlehem Immensee Mission . On March 28, 1947, he was appointed Prefect Apostolic of Fort Victoria , Zimbabwe. On June 25, 1950, when the Apostolic Prefecture was elevated to the position of Apostolic Vicariate, he was appointed Vicar Apostolic and at the same time titular Bishop of Nepte .

On October 1, 1950, he received the episcopal ordination by the Vicar Apostolic of Salisbury Aston Ignatius Chichester . Co-consecrators were the Vicar Apostolic of Ndola Francis Constantin Mazzieri OFM and the Coadjutor as Vicar Apostolic of Johannesburg William Patrick Whelan . With the elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate to the Diocese of Gwelo on January 1, 1950, Haene was replaced by Pope Pius XII. appointed first diocesan bishop . He remained Bishop of Gwelo until his retirement on February 3, 1977.

As a council father, Haene attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . From 1972 to 1974 he was chairman of the Bishops' Conference in Zimbabwe.
