Aldo Mieli (born December 4, 1879 in Livorno , † February 16, 1950 in Florida , Argentina ) was an Italian mathematician.

Mieli studied chemistry in Pisa and Leipzig (with Wilhelm Ostwald ) and mathematics with Ulisse Dini . From 1905 to 1912 he was Emanuele Paternò's assistant at the University of Rome. From 1908 he was a lecturer there and from 1912 he turned increasingly to the history of science and in 1921 founded the journal Archivio di storia della scienza , which became Archeion . In Italy in 1921 he founded a society for sex research (Rassegna di studi sessuali) , which he led, and campaigned for the abolition of the criminal prosecution of homosexuality (where he brought out writings by Magnus Hirschfeld ).

For political reasons (rise of the fascists) he went to Paris in 1928, where he founded the history of science department at the Center Internationale de Synthèse (CIS) of Henri Berr in Paris in 1929 . Members were Hélène Metzger , Pierre Brunet and external members Florian Cajori , Gino Loria and Quido Vetter . Mieli founded the International Committee for the History of Science and organized the first International Congress of History of Science in Paris in 1929, which later became the Académie internationale d'histoire des sciences (AIHS) with Mieli as permanent secretary. The seat in the mezzanine of the Hotel de Nevers in Paris with its library (Mieli had brought an extensive private library with her from Italy) was the meeting place for science historians in Paris (in addition to the aforementioned Alexandre Koyré , Paul Mouy , Charles Serrus ). Mieli continued to publish his journal Archeion , founded in Italy (he also edited the Revue de synthèse ).

In 1939 he went into exile in Argentina for political reasons and taught at the Universidad Nacional de Litoral and founded the Institute for the History of Science and Philosophy of Science in Rosario . There he founded the Biblioteca del Instituto and Panorama general de historia del ciencia series (from 1945 in twelve volumes, completed by Desiderio Papp and José Babini , the latter a close collaborator of Mieli).

Aldo Mieli became a member of the Leopoldina in 1925 .
