course
The road runs in a west-east direction mostly at some distance from the coast of the Gulf of Finland . As far as the Lahemaa National Park , it is developed like a motorway. It then bypasses the town of Rakvere in the north, passes the junction of Põhimaantee 5 (national road 5) to Pärnu in the east of the city and leads through Kohtla-Järve , Jõhvi , where Põhimaantee 3 (national road 3; also European route 264 ) to Tartu (Dorpat) and Valga (Walk) branches off, and on via Sillamäe to Narva . There it crosses the border river Narva and thus the border with Russia and leads to the Russian border town Ivangorod (Russia) ( Estonian : Jaanilinn ).
history
During Estonia's membership of the Soviet Union, the road was called Magistrale M11. The eastern connection from Ivangorod to Saint Petersburg continued to have this name until 2010, but was then downgraded to the A180 .
