Don Alejandro Robaina Pereda (born March 20, 1919 in Alquízar , Cuba , † April 17, 2010 in San Luis ) was a well-known and successful Cuban tobacco grower.

In the third generation he led, 16, founded in 1845 by his ancestor  hectares large plantation in the Cuban province of Pinar del Río on. The valley, also known as Vuelta Abajo, is one of the best quality tobacco growing areas in the world.

After the revolution , he convinced Fidel Castro not to forcibly nationalize tobacco cultivation. Alejandro Robaina: “At a meeting with Comandante Fidel, I explained that we would like to continue producing tobacco ourselves. He probably saw that, because immediately afterwards he divided the land between us. This initiative is based on my conviction that tobacco production only works well in a family business. ” From this meeting a lifelong personal friendship with Fidel Castro developed , which brought Alejandro Robaina a few small privileges.

The proportion of difficult-to-produce wrapper leaves in the total harvest is extremely high. It is around 80%, while other plantations only achieve around 35% on average. Because of his merits, the Vegas Robaina brand was introduced in his honor in 1997 . Presumably, the Cuban sales organization "Habanos SA" wanted to benefit from Robaina's already high profile in specialist circles and his excellent reputation as a tobacco specialist. Robaina has been quoted several times that its wrapper pages are not always part of the Vegas Robaina.

Alejandro Robaina still developed new tobacco blends and cigars in old age . For his own use, special cigars were made from his own tobacco on his property. Alejandro Robaina lived in a small finca in the center of his plantations and traveled the world as an ambassador for Cuban cigars. Robaina's grandson Hiroshi has been in charge of tobacco cultivation since the beginning of 2004.
