Alessandro Peretti
Alessandro Damasceni Peretti , called Cardinal Montalto (* 1571 in Montalto delle Marche , † June 2, 1623 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life and Church Career
Peretti was the son of Fabio Damasceni and his wife Maria Mignucci Peretti; on his mother's side he was a great-nephew of Pope Sixtus V.
His great uncle Felice Peretti was elected Pope on April 24, 1585. As Sixtus V he appointed his fourteen-year-old great-nephew Alessandro as cardinal deacon with effect from May 13 of the same year and on June 14, 1585 awarded him the title deaconry of San Girolamo dei Croati . During the pontificate of Sixtus V he worked as a cardinal depository and in 1589 became Vice Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church . In addition, he was cardinal protector of several important orders (e.g. the Benedictines) and of the Kingdom of Poland. After the death of his great-uncle, he lost much of his power. He later emerged as the architect of peace between the papacy and Henry of Navarre . Peretti became cardinal priest on March 30, 1620 with the titular church of San Lorenzo in Damaso , which he had held as titular deaconry since 1589.
On April 6, 1620 Alessandro Peretti was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Albano appointed and received on 19 July 1620 by Pope Paul V , the episcopal ordination , Mitkonsekrator was Benedetto Giustiniani , Cardinal Bishop of Sabina .
Damasceni Peretti (the name Damasceni is also understood as a surname) participated in the conclaves of September 1590 , October – December 1590 , 1591 , 1592 , March 1605 , May 1605 and the conclave of 1621 .
Alessandro Peretti died in Rome on June 2, 1623 at the age of about 52. He found his final resting place in the chapel of Santo Presepio .
Alessandro Peretti was the uncle of Cardinal Francesco Peretti di Montalto .
Work and honors
After the Cardinals Raffaele Riario and Giovanni Francesco Gambara , Alessandro Peretti was the third major builder of the Villa Lante in Bagnaia .
The sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini created a remarkable bust of Cardinal Montalto , which is now in the Hamburger Kunsthalle .
