Alessandro Farnese (born January 10, 1635 in Parma , † February 18, 1689 in Madrid ) was Prince of Parma and Piacenza.

Life

Alessandro Farnese was the second son of Odoardo I Farnese (April 28, 1612 - September 11, 1646) and his wife Margherita de 'Medici (May 31, 1612 - February 6, 1679). He is also known as Alessandro di Odoardo to avoid confusion with his great-grandfather Alessandro Farnese (born August 27, 1545, † December 3, 1592).

Farnese held numerous political and military offices throughout his career. From September 1656 to 1658 he was General of the Venetian Knights. At the end of the war between Venice and the Ottoman Empire, he joined the Spanish Army. There he became general of the Italian knights on November 17, 1664. In 1675 he became Viceroy of Navarre and was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece . On July 25, 1676, he gave up his office and was viceroy of Catalonia until May 25, 1677 . He was sent to the Spanish Netherlands , where he was governor from 1678 to April 1, 1682. He then fought from December 21, 1682 to 1687 again as a general for the Venetians. In 1687 he was appointed Grand Admiral of the Spanish Fleet, at the same time he also became an advisor to the Crown.

He died in Madrid on February 18, 1689.

Alexandro Farnese was never married. But he had children with his mistress Maria Lao y Carillo .
