Alessandro Galli da Bibiena

Alessandro Galli da Bibiena (born October 15, 1686 in Parma , † May 5, 1748 in Mannheim ) was an Italian architect , painter , scenographer and theater engineer of the late Baroque era .

Life

Alessandro Galli da Bibiena became an architect and engineer under Elector Karl Philipp in 1719, and later became a court architect in Mannheim . He came from a large family of architects: his father Ferdinando , his uncle Francesco , his younger brothers Antonio and Giuseppe and his nephew Carlo worked as architects, outfitters and set designers in Germany, Austria and Italy .

He took on the construction of the Mannheim Jesuit Church (1733-1760) and the expansion of the Mannheim Palace with the construction of a large opera house (destroyed in 1797), which extended south from the western pavilion. After the death of Elector Karl Philipp in 1742, Bibiena planned the circular buildings of the Schwetzingen Palace under Karl Theodor . However, he died before it was completed.

Honor

A street is named after him in the Neckarstadt-Ost district of Mannheim .
