Alexander Eibner

Alexander Eibner (born September 11, 1862 in Munich ; † May 1, 1935 there ) was a German chemist and painting technologist. He is regarded as the old master of painting research and teaching.

Life

Alexander Eibner, son of the architectural painter Friedrich Eibner , studied chemistry at the Technical University of Munich , where he became Wilhelm von Miller's assistant . In 1892 he received his doctorate, habilitated in 1894 and did research in the field of aromatic chemistry. In 1903 he moved to the newly founded research institute and information center for painting technology on the corner of Luisenstrasse and Gabelsbergerstrasse , which he headed from 1908, as assistant to Gustav Schultz . He belonged to the German Society for Rational Painting Techniques . He and the art historian Walter Gräff , with whom he worked, gave lectures in Rome in 1930 on the scientific investigation and conservation of art objects. After Eibner's retirement, Gräff wrote a memorandum in 1932 for an “investigation and research institute for paintings and other works of fine art”. After the deaths of both of them, the research institute was closed, but from 1937 on the Doerner Institute followed up.

The tomb of Alexander Eibner is on the old southern cemetery in Munich (burial ground 41 - row 13 - 24th) Location . His father Friedrich Eibner (1825–1877) also lies in the grave.
