Alexander York von Wartenburg
Alexander York von Wartenburg (born May 13, 1927 in Berlin ; † January 25, 2012 in Bonn ) was a German diplomat .
Life
He was the son of the actress Else Eckersberg from her marriage to Philipp Freiherr Schey von Koromla . After his mother was married to Count Paul Yorck von Wartenburg for the third time on May 5, 1940 , Alexander was adopted by his stepfather in 1950 , whereby the original form York was chosen for the spelling of his name .
York von Wartenburg was Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City from 1987 to 1989 . He was then Ambassador to Portugal from 1989 until his retirement in 1992 .
He later became deputy chairman of the German Society for the United Nations (DGVN) and in this capacity was co-signer of a press release in March 2003 stating that the Iraq war could not be justified.
In May 2004 he opened an exhibition on Germany and the United Nations at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena with a speech on the topic From Observer to Full Member, Germany's Role in the UN . He was an honorary member of the Förderkreis 1813 Wartenburg e. V. In December 2009 he was elected a member of the DGVN Presidium.
honors and awards
For his services to German-Portuguese friendship he was awarded the Merkur Prize of the German-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and in 1990 the Portuguese Order for Merit .
