Hans Werner Lautenschlager (born January 31, 1927 in Tientsin , China ; † June 29, 2019 in Bonn ) was a German diplomat .

Life

Hans Werner Lautenschlager was married to Renate Lautenschlager geb. Rall († 2007), with whom he had two children Barbara and Martin. He last lived in Wachtberg-Pech near Bonn .

Hans Werner Lautenschlager attended the German School in Shanghai , where he graduated from high school in 1944. He then studied law in Heidelberg , Basel and Hamburg . He passed the 1st state law examination in 1950 and the 2nd in 1954. In 1952 he graduated as Dr. jur.

In 1955 Lautenschlager joined the Foreign Service . He initially worked in the Foreign Office in Bonn. From 1958 to 1964 he was seconded to the Commission of the European Atomic Energy Community . Between 1964 and 1968 he worked at the New Delhi embassy and came back to the Foreign Office in 1968 with the positions of the Soviet Union, Head of Trade and Agricultural Policy of the EC, Head of Sub-Department, Head of Department IV (Foreign Trade Policy, Development Policy and European Economic Integration).

From 1979 to 1984 he was permanent secretary of state , from 1984 to 1987 ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in New York . From 1987 to 1993 he was State Secretary again and from 1993 to 1999 he was a lecturer at the Law and Political Science Faculty of the University of Bonn .

Hans Werner Lautenschlager was awarded the Great Cross of Merit (1981) with star (1984) and shoulder ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1988 , and in 1989 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique . In addition, he received numerous other foreign awards.

He was a member of the Presidium of the German Society for the United Nations .
