Life

Alexander Gutbier studied chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden , in Munich, at the University of Zurich (summer semester 1897) and at the University of Erlangen . During his studies in Dresden he became a member of the Corps Teutonia Dresden. His academic teachers included Otto Fischer , Fritz Foerster , Walther Hempel and the Nobel Prize winner Alfred Werner . In 1899 he received his doctorate in Erlangen.

In 1902 he completed his habilitation in Erlangen. In 1907 the university appointed him associate professor. In 1912 he was appointed full professor for electrochemistry and chemical technology at the Technical University of Stuttgart . He took part in the First World War. From 1920 to 1922 he was rector until he was appointed full professor and director of the chemical laboratory at the University of Jena . Through his initiative, an independent mathematics and natural science faculty was split off from the philosophy faculty. In 1926 he left his life voluntarily as the acting rector of the University of Jena for the academic year 1926/27.

Alexander Gutbier was one of the pioneers of complex chemistry and especially colloid chemistry . Numerous metal colloids were synthesized by him for the first time. Through his work he contributed to the understanding of the effectiveness of organic compounds as protective colloids .
