Alexander Hamilton-Gordon (General, 1817)

Sir Alexander Hamilton-Gordon KCB ( December 11, 1817 - May 19, 1890 ) was a British general and politician .

Life

He was born as "Alexander Gordon" and was the second son of George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen , who was British Prime Minister from 1852 to 1855, from his second marriage to Harriet Douglas. On November 13, 1818, his father changed the family name to "Hamilton-Gordon".

He joined the British Army and took part in the Crimean War as a lieutenant-colonel . He fought in the Battle of Balaklava in 1854, was promoted to Brevet - Colonel on December 6, 1854 and was appointed Deputy Quartermaster General in September 1855 . On July 5, 1855, he was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). After the war he was promoted to Colonel on September 10, 1856. On April 20, 1861 he was promoted to major-general and on January 1, 1872 to lieutenant-general . On July 5, 1872, he was appointed Colonel of the 100th Regiment of Foot and promoted to General on October 2, 1877. On May 24, 1873 he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB).

In 1881 he became Honorary Equerry to Queen Victoria and Colonel of the 1st Battalion of the Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment . In 1883 he was made Colonel of Honor of the 3rd Rifle Corps (Aberdeenshire Volunteers) .

From 1875 to 1885 he was a member of the British House of Commons as a Liberal Party MP for the constituency of East Aberdeenshire .

He died in 1890 at the age of 72.

Marriage and offspring

In 1852 he married Caroline Emilia Mary Herschel († 1909), daughter of Sir John Herschel, 1st Baronet. In 1855 she became Queen Victoria's maid of honor. He had nine children with her:

  • William Reginald Hamilton-Gordon (1864-1890);
  • Ernest Arthur Hamilton-Gordon (1866-1920);
  • Louisa Hamilton-Gordon (1868-1929);
  • George Herschel Hamilton-Gordon (1872–1939) ⚭ 1918 Mary Elizabeth Benwell.
