Alexander Juljewitsch Grosberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Juljewitsch Grosberg ( Russian Александр Юльевич Гросберг ; born February 2, 1949 in Moscow ) is a Soviet polymer physicist , biophysicist and university professor .

Life

In 1972 Grosberg completed his physics studies at the Chair of Electrodynamics and Quantum Physics of the Physics Faculty of Lomonosov University in Moscow . He then worked at the Semyonov Institute for Chemical Physics at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow until 1999 . Under the scientific supervision of Ilja Lifschitz , Grosberg received his doctorate from the Kapiza Institute for Physical Problems in 1975 as a candidate for science . Together with Ilja Lifschitz and AR Chochlow , he developed a theory of the coil-droplet transition in polymers and biopolymer systems using conformational entropy and density functional theory . In 1982 he received his doctorate in science from Lomonosov University in Moscow . 1989–1993 Grosberg taught biophysics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology .

1993–1999 Grosberg worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the group of Toyoichi Tanaka. Tanaka and Gros mountain supervised the doctoral thesis of Vijay S. Pande . In 1999 Grosberg became Professor of Physics at the University of Minnesota . In 2008 he became professor of physics at New York University .

Grosberg's work focuses on problems of protein folding and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), phase transitions in polymer systems , knot formation in macromolecules , heterogeneous polymers, polymer gels and liquid crystals .
