Alexander Köhler (politician)

Alexander Wilhelm Köhler (born February 5, 1756 in Freiberg ; † December 23, 1832 there ) was a German mining lawyer and mayor of the city of Freiberg.

Köhler was born on February 5, 1756 as the son of the royal Polish and electoral Saxon miner of Freiberg, Johann Samuel Köhler, and his wife Christiane Elisabeth, née. Bormann, born in Freiberg. None other than the electoral Saxon chief miner Curt Alexander von Schönberg and the electoral Saxon miner Friedrich Wilhelm von Oppel acted as godparents on February 7, 1756 in the church of St. Petri zu Freiberg . He probably grew up in what is now Waisenhausstrasse 7. After (presumably) received private tuition, Köhler attended the Freiberg grammar school from 1767 to 1773 and then studied mining art and mathematics at the Bergakademie Freiberg .

In 1775 he went to the University of Leipzig to u. a. To study law and philosophy, in 1778 he returned to Freiberg. From 1779 Köhler worked as an auditor and recorder in the Oberhüttenamt. On March 25, 1780 he became a travel agent at the Oberbergamt and in 1784 secretary of the Oberbergamt.

On May 8, 1786, Elector Friedrich August III. the introduction of lessons in mining law at the Bergakademie by rescript , and Köhler was hired as a teacher - initially "to try" for two years. In a rescript dated July 28, 1788, the elector named Köhler a "permanent" teacher of mining rights, and he was also given a practical college on the German style . A year earlier, in 1787, Köhler had been accepted as an honorary member of the Leipzig Economic Society .

In addition to his teaching activities, Alexander Wilhelm Köhler worked as an author and editor. The work attempt at a guide to the rights and the constitution in mining in Chursachsen and associated countries ... served for a long time as the basis for his lectures on mining law. From 1788 to 1794 Köhler published the Bergmännische Journal in the Craz'schen Buchhandlung Freiberg , from 1792 he was supported by his son-in-law Christian August Siegfried Hoffmann . In 1795 they continued the series under the title Neues Bergmännisches Journal , the last volumes (3/1802 and 4/1816) were handled by Hoffmann alone. In 1790 and 1791, Koehler's Mining Calendar was published - also by Craz . His speech at Christlieb Ehregott Gellert's grave was also put to print.

In 1800 Köhler became a member of the Freiberg city council. From 1821 to 1830, Köhler held the office of governing or associate mayor of the city of Freiberg, alternating annually with Peter Gotthelf Stockmann . In this function he was also in charge of the Freiberg Bergschöppenstuhl, the highest judicial authority in the Kingdom of Saxony in matters of mining law.

On the occasion of his 50th anniversary of service on March 26, 1830, Köhler received the certificate of appointment of the sovereign to the Mining Commission Council from the then chief miner Siegmund August Wolfgang Freiherr von Herder .

Koehler was a Freemason and belonged to the lodge To the Three Mountains . He later served as the Chair's Master for nine years before resigning and resigning.

For over 50 years he was with the pastor's daughter Beate Katharine, born in Reipzig (near Frankfurt / Oder). Weinspach, with whom he had several children, married.
