Alexander Borodin Parfenjewitsch ( Russian Александр Парфеньевич Бородин ; born September 28, jul. / 10. October  1848 greg. In St. Petersburg , † March 26 jul. / 7. April  1898 greg. In Merano ) was a Russian engineer , railway - Expert and one of the founders of the construction of steam locomotives in Russia .

Life

Alexander Borodin came from a noble family of soldiers from the Yekaterinoslav governorate . His older brother was the later famous botanist Ivan Parfenjewitsch Borodin (1847-1930).

In 1870 Alexander Borodin graduated from the St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University . He then studied at the St. Petersburg University of Transport Engineering, graduating in 1872. On the recommendation of the professor of mechanics Ivan Alexejewitsch Wyschnegradski , he was then head of rolling stock and water supply of the railway line from Ryazhsk to Vyazma . In 1877 he became managing director of the Kiev-Brest Railway . In 1879 he switched to the Südwest-Eisenbahn , became chief engineer for rolling stock, train conveyance and the workshops, in 1889 managing director and in 1895 after the transition of the Südwest-Eisenbahn to the state, its director.

From 1880–1882, Borodin built the world's first permanent laboratory for checking steam locomotives in motion at the Kiev location of the Südwest-Eisenbahn. Together with the traffic engineer LM Lewi, Borodin developed a test method for locomotives in motion. In 1882, Borodin's 4-cylinder composite steam locomotives were built according to a project ( Russian class П ).

Borodin was the permanent president of the Conferences of Train Service Engineers of the Russian Railways. He campaigned several times for the improvement of working conditions and the mechanization of rail transport. Together with others he founded the journal Der Ingenieur and became its publisher in 1885. He actively participated in the work of the Russian Technical Society . He was a member of the Kiev section from 1880–1896, and in 1892 he headed the mechanical engineering department. The Russian Technical Society later donated the Borodin Gold Medal , with which it honored outstanding inventions and rationalizations in rail transport. Borodin was also a member of engineering societies in England and France .

Borodin was a state councilor ( 5th nobility rank ).

Borodin died during a cure in Merano at a pneumonia . He found his (no longer existing) grave on the banks of the Dnepr in Kiev in what is now the Askold Grave Park . He was married to Anna Vladimirovna b. Dolschenkowa, who was related to the literary critic and playwright Innokenti Fyodorowitsch Annensky . His son Alexander Alexandrovich (1885–1925) was a lecturer in Russian.
