Friedrich Alexander Riese (born June 2, 1840 in Frankfurt am Main ; † October 8, 1922 there ) was a German classical philologist .
Life
Alexander Riese came from a respected Frankfurt family. His great-uncle Johann Jakob Riese (1746-1827) was a childhood friend of Goethe , from whom A. Rieses owned a few letters until 1920. A portrait of his great-uncle von Goethe's hand, which Riese presented in the Frankfurter Zeitung on April 3, 1911 and which was later considered lost for a long time, has been in the Frankfurt Goethe Museum since 2008.
Alexander Riese attended grammar school in Frankfurt, studied philology at the universities of Erlangen, Bonn and Berlin from 1859–1863. In 1863 he became an adjunct at the Joachimsthalschen Gymnasium in Berlin, in 1864 a private lecturer and in 1868 an associate professor at the University of Heidelberg for a few months. One of his students became the philologist and specialist in ancient philosophy Karl Praechter .
In 1868 Riese became senior teacher and in 1871 professor at the grammar school in Frankfurt a. M. He worked in Frankfurt until the end of his life and took part in the cultural life of his hometown in many ways. In Heddernheim , where he played a key role in excavating Roman finds, a street is named after him today.

Alexander Riese is scientifically significant primarily due to his critical text editions and studies of text transmission. In addition to studies of the Menippe satires Varros and Catullus , Riese turned primarily to the small Latin poetry of antiquity. His collective edition of the Anthologia Latina , the first part of which he took care of himself (the second part with the verse inscriptions was published by Franz Bücheler ), has not been replaced today either. In addition, Riese published in the area of local history; so he edited, among other things, the Roman inscriptions of the Rhineland.
