Julius Cahn

Julius Alfred Cahn (born January 15, 1872 in Mainz , † December 24, 1935 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German numismatist and coin dealer.

Life

Julius Cahn was a son of the coin dealer Adolph E. Cahn (1839-1918). Erich B. Cahn and Herbert A. Cahn were his nephews.

He attended the Wöhlerschule and the municipal grammar school in Frankfurt until he graduated in 1891. He then studied history , art history and classics at the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität in Strasbourg and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin (winter semester 1892/93 summer semester 1893) Archeology . In April 1895 he was in Strasbourg with a thesis on "coin and history of the city of Strasbourg in the Middle Ages" Dr. phil. PhD. After a short stay in Rome, where he also worked at the German Archaeological Institute , Cahn joined his father's minting business in 1896, since 1905 he was co-owner with his brother Ludwig (1877–1924), and after his death with his widow Johanna, nee Neuberger (1881-1963).

In addition to his work as a coin dealer, Cahn conducted studies with a focus on German, medieval numismatics. In addition to monographs, he published numerous articles in specialist journals . He was a permanent employee of the Frankfurter Münzzeitung and the Deutsche Münzbl Blätter . His company's coin catalogs are also assigned scientific value.

His book “Der Rappenmünzbund . A study on the history of coins and money in the upper Rhine Valley ». On behalf of the Baden Historical Commission , the first and only volume of a Baden coin history was published in 1911, "Coin and Monetary History of Constance and the Lake Constance Area in the Middle Ages up to the Imperial Coin Act of 1559".

Cahn was a member of the Central German Arts and Crafts Association in which many private collectors came together. In 1935, under pressure from the Nazi regime, the Jewish members were forced to leave. Cahn was one of the few who protested in their resignation letter in October 1935 against the adjustment policy of the board. Cahn died the following December.
