Alexander Tornquist

Alexander Tornquist (born June 18, 1868 in Hamburg , † November 1, 1944 in Graz ) was a German geologist .

Life

Tornquist was appointed professor of geology and palaeontology at the University of Strasbourg in 1900 and from there in 1907 accepted a position at the University of Königsberg . From 1914 to 1933 he was professor of mineralogy and geology at the Graz University of Technology and temporarily also its rector.

In August 1912 he was one of the 34 founding members of the Paleontological Society .

The Tornquist Zone in the Baltic Sea between Northern Germany and Scandinavia and the Paleozoic Tornquist Ocean are named after him.

His daughter Erika married the set designer Caspar Neher in Graz in 1923 .
