Aleksandra Potanina (born January 25, jul. / 6. February 1843 greg. In Gorbatov , government Nizhny Novgorod , † September 19 jul. / 1. October 1893 greg. At Zhuo-Hua , China ) was a Russian geographer and explorer . She was the first woman to be admitted to the Russian Geographical Society .
Life
She was the daughter of the teacher of the Nizhny Novgorod seminary, Viktor Lavrovsky. At home she was raised by her older brothers and attended a school for clergy girls. She read a lot and had a talent for drawing. In 1866 she became a teacher in the city's diocesan school. In 1872, while visiting her exiled brother Konstantin in Nikolsk (Vologda Oblast) , she met his friend Grigori Potanin , whom she married in 1874 and with whom she moved to Saint Petersburg .
Together with her husband, Potanina took part in four research trips to Central Asia between 1876 and 1893 . The first expedition led in 1876/1877 to the north-west of Mongolia , in 1879/1880 an expedition followed from the place Saissan into the valley of the black Irtysh , from 1884 to 1886 northern China, eastern Tibet and central Mongolia were visited, 1892/1893 finally the Tibetan highlands and the Gobi desert . During the last expedition Potanina became seriously ill and died near Zhuo-Hua on the way to Shanghai . She was buried in Kjachta ( Buryatia ).
Awards
In 1887 she was awarded the great gold medal of the Russian Geographical Society for her scientific work "The Buryats" . In the mountains of the Mongolian Altai a glacier "Alexandrin" is named after her.
