Alexandre Cioranescu
Alexandre Cioranescu ( Romanian Alexandru Ciorănescu, Spanish Alejandro Cioranescu) (born November 15, 1911 in Moroeni ; † November 25, 1999 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife ) was a Romanian author, Romanist , comparativeist and historian with French nationality, who lived in Romania , in France and 50 years in Tenerife.
life and work
Cioranescu made the best high school diploma of his year in Romania. He studied in Bucharest and from 1934 at the Sorbonne , where he received his doctorate with the thesis L'Arioste en France des origines à la fin du XVIIIe siècle (2 vols., Paris 1939, Turin 1970, Paris 1970). From 1938 to 1940 he was a lecturer at the University of Lyon , from 1940 to 1942 cultural attaché at the Romanian embassy in Paris, then returned to Bucharest, in 1946 achieved a new embassy in Paris, but was dismissed by the new communist rulers of Romania in 1947 and left in 1948 (initially as a French lecturer) at the University of La Laguna in Tenerife . He stayed there until the end of his life, mostly as a professor "encargado de curso". In 1958 he obtained French citizenship and was seconded from the University of Bordeaux to La Laguna from 1965 to teach comparative literature , and from 1978 as a full professor of comparative literature .
The University of La Laguna made Cioranescu an honorary doctorate in 1990.
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife a street (Calle Alejandro Cioranescu) is named after him.
