Alexandru "Sandu" Neagu (born July 19, 1948 in Bucharest , † April 17, 2010 ibid) was a Romanian football player . The striker took part in the 1970 World Cup for the Romanian national team.
Career
Neagu played exclusively for Rapid Bucharest in his career . He made his debut for the club from his hometown in 1965, before winning the second Romanian championship title in club history two years later with the club. After the runner-up in 1969 he moved into the circle of the national team, in which he made his debut in February 1970 in a 1-1 draw against Peru . In his second international match, a 1-1 draw against West Germany , he scored his first international goal. As a result, he was part of the squad for the World Cup finals in Mexico in the summer and scored one goal in three tournaments. Until 1972 he stayed in the national team, for which he played 15 officially recognized A-countries two games as part of the qualification for the 1972 Olympic Games . In the same year he won his second national title by winning the national cup, which was followed by another cup victory in 1975. In 1978 he ended his career at Rapid Bucharest after scoring 93 goals in 254 first division games for the club.
After the end of his active career, Neagu divorced his first wife. He started drinking alcohol and after a few years suffered from diabetes mellitus and cirrhosis of the liver . Since he could not make a living, his ex-club Rapid Bucharest allowed him to move into a small room in the Stadionul Giuleşti - Valentin Stănescu . Former national team colleagues like Necula Răducanu and Mircea Lucescu helped him to find a place to stay , first in Bucharest and later in Argeș County . In the fall of 2009, Neagu and his second wife moved from Câmpulung to Poiana Lacului , where the couple lived in abject poverty. On April 14, 2010 Neagu attended Ioan Andone's training at Rapid Bucharest and broke his right femur . Due to his poor physical condition, the doctors at the Spitalul Universitar de Urgență Bucureşti had to postpone a surgical procedure, whereupon Neagu suffered two heart attacks on April 17, 2010, as a result of which he died.
