Alexei Stanislawowitsch Jelissejew ( Russian Алексей Станиславович Елисеев ; actually Alexei Kuraitis, born July 13, 1934 in Schizdra , Kaluga Oblast , Russian SFSR ) is a former Soviet cosmonaut . Alexei Stanislawowitsch Yelissejew was born as Alexei Kuraitis. His father Stanislaw A. Kuraitis was Lithuanian , his mother Russian . After his father was sentenced to five years of forced labor in a gulag for alleged anti-Soviet propaganda in 1939 , he took his mother's name in 1950 for fear of future repression.
education
Jelissejew studied mechanical engineering at the Moscow State Technical NEBauman University in Moscow , which he graduated in 1957; until he was accepted as a cosmonaut he worked as an engineer in Sergei Korolev's rocket construction office . Accepted as a candidate in technical sciences in 1967, the engineer received his doctorate in technical sciences in 1973.
Astronaut activity
After Jelissejew was accepted into the cosmonaut corps in 1966, the engineer was selected as a cosmonaut by the Central Design Office of Mechanical Engineering on May 27, 1968. On January 15, 1969, he flew into space as a flight engineer with Soyuz 5 , where his ship formed the first experimental orbital station by coupling with Soyuz 4 . Through an EVA he switched to Soyuz 4 on January 16, 1969 together with Yevgeny Khrunov . Nine months later, Jelissejew was a member of the crew of Soyuz 8 as a flight engineer , who carried out the first group flight of three spaceships together with Soyuz 6 and Soyuz 7 . Yelissejew also had his last flight into space as a flight engineer for Soyuz 10 , whose complete coupling to Salyut 1 did not succeed.
Subsequent activities
After Alexei Jelissejew left the cosmonaut corps on December 19, 1985, he became rector of the Bauman University in Moscow. In 1991 he was retired.
Private
Yelissejew is married and has one child.
Awards
Alexei Yelissew was awarded the Order of Hero of the Soviet Union twice (January 22 and October 22, 1969) and twice with the Order of Lenin .
