Alexei Alexejewitsch Wenediktow ( Russian Алексе́й Алексе́евич Венеди́ктов ; *  December 18, 1955 in Moscow ) is a Russian journalist , editor-in-chief , co-owner (18%) and presenter of the radio station " Echo Moskwy ".

Life

Wenediktov's father of the same name, a graduate of the Pacific Higher Naval School by the name of S. O. Makarov, naval officer Alexei Nikolaevich Wenediktov, had died in stormy seas off the coast of Kamchatka just a few weeks before his son was born . Grandfather Nikolai served in the Soviet secret service NKVD and was awarded the Order of the Red Star for his military services in the Great Patriotic War . The grandmother Nina Abramovna Dychowitschnaja was a civil engineer. His mother, Eleonora Abramowna Dychowitschnaja, was a doctor of Jewish origin and came from a prominent generation of engineers . Together with Alexei's sister, she emigrated to the USA in 1983 .

Because of his poor vision (−10), Wenedktow was not called up into the army after graduating from school. In 1978 he graduated from the evening department of the Moscow State Pedagogical University . He then worked as a postman for some time . Wenediktov also worked as a history teacher for 20 years, including 19 years at Moscow School No. 875.

Wenediktov began his journalistic career in 1990 when the radio station "Echo Moskwy" started. From a simple newspaper columnist in 1995 he rose first to director of the information department, and in 1998 to editor-in-chief of "Echo Moskwy". Since 2002 he has been president of the television company " Echo-TV Russia ". In 2006, Wenediktow hosted the short-lived TV show “W kruge Sweta” (In the Circle of Light) on the Domaschny TV station together with the well-known journalist Swetlana Sorokina . After only two weeks, the program was stopped because of alleged criticism of the Russian judicial system, although the chief producer Alexander Rodjanski asserted that his program did not interfere with political issues.

Echo Moskwy’s shares are 66 percent owned by Gazprom-Media Holding, a subsidiary of Gazprombank . In an interview in November 2014, Wenediktov claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally saved his show from being closed by Mikhail Lessin . According to him, there were at least two similar attempts under the presidency of Dmitry Medvedev . Because of critical reports, Wenediktov is threatened by Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov . He and his family are therefore under personal protection.

Wenediktov was confirmed in his position as editor-in-chief of Echo Moskvy in 2005, 2008 and 2011. In 2014 he was elected editor-in-chief of Russia's largest radio station for the fourth time for a further five years. He describes his political attitudes as conservative and himself as reactionary, with Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher his "idols in politics".

Wenediktow has been the owner of the historical magazine Dilettant since October 2015 . He sits on the Public Council of the Russian Defense Ministry and is also a member of the Moscow City Chamber .

Private

Wenediktow has been married to Jelena Sitnikowa since April 1998 and has a son who also bears his name.
