life and work
Else Kirsten Tove Alfelt was born in Copenhagen. After her parents divorced, she spent the time between the ages of 7 and 15 in a boarding school, after which she attended Københavns Tekniske Skole , the craft school in Copenhagen. Else Alfelt had been painting since she was 13, and at 17 she discovered oil painting. Alfelt was an autodidact as a painter .
In 1933 she attended Den Internationale Højskole University in Helsingør . There she met Carl-Henning Pedersen (1913–2007), who modeled her for the portrait “The Young Communist” and whom she later encouraged to become a painter. Alfelt and Pedersen married in 1934 and had two daughters. Alfelt had her first solo exhibition in the Thorkild Hansen art gallery in Copenhagen. In 1942 she became a member of the artist group Høst .
In 1948 Asger Jorn wrote a manifesto with artist colleagues , which Else Alfelt, Carl-Henning Pedersen, Egill Jacobsen , Ejler Bille , Dahlmann Olsen and Erik Thommesen signed. The artist groups from Co hagen, Br üssel and A msterdam united, among other things, on the initiative of Asger Jorn on November 8 that year in a cafe in Paris to CoBrA.
In 1976, the Carl-Henning Pedersen og Else Alfelts Museum was opened in Herning in Jutland .
