Alfons von Streng

Alfons von Streng (born November 6, 1852 in Frauenfeld , † December 25, 1940 in Fischingen ) was a Swiss politician ( Catholic Conservative ).

Life

Streng studied law in Heidelberg and Leuven and received his doctorate in 1875. He worked as a lawyer for August Wild in Fischingen , from around 1880 as an independent lawyer in Sirnach , from 1925 in Emmishofen and from 1937 until his death in Fischingen.

In addition to his legal mandates, he was President of the Münchwilen District Court from 1881 to 1909 and Thurgau Grand Councilor from 1887 to 1926 , which he presided over in 1895/1896, 1911/1912 and 1924/1925. In 1904 Von Streng was elected as the first Catholic - Conservative National Council of the Canton of Thurgau . From 1914 to 1919 he was president of the CVP faction. Streng was a member of the Catholic Church Council from 1886 and President of the Catholic Church Council from 1900 until his death. In 1895 he was a co-founder of the press association to support conservative press organs in Thurgau. In 1906 he founded and presided over the Catholic People's Party of the Canton of Thurgau until 1934. From 1912 to 1935 he was on the board of the Catholic People's Party in Switzerland.

Streng was a member of the board of directors of Thurgauer Kantonalbank from 1898 to 1909 and its president from 1909 to 1937. From 1909 to 1940 he was a board member of the Swiss National Bank and in 1912 the main initiator and then chairman of the board of directors of the Mittelthurgau Railway .

Streng maintained good friendships with the National Councilors Heinrich Walther , Caspar Decurtins and Ernst Feigenwinter as well as with Federal Councilor Giuseppe Motta . He was a lieutenant colonel on the general staff and in the infantry . From 1912 he was an honorary citizen of Sirnach.
