Alfred Bühler (ethnologist)

Alfred Bühler (born January 14, 1900 in Zug , † July 29, 1981 in Basel , legal resident in Bubikon , since 1915 in Basel) was a Swiss ethnologist and explorer .

Life

Family and education

A native of Zug Alfred Bühler, son of railway employees Alfred Bühler senior and his wife Ida, born Hitz, devoted himself after graduation , followed by teacher training, the study of geography and ethnography at the University of Basel , in 1928 took place there his doctorate to Dr. phil. .

Alfred Bühler, who married Kristin, born Oppenheim in 1943, died in the summer of 1981 at the age of 82 in Basel.

Professional background

After graduating, Bühler worked as a primary school teacher , later as a secondary teacher , and most recently as a teacher at the cantonal commercial school. After completing his studies, he undertook several research trips from 1930, which took him to areas that now belong to East Timor , Papua New Guinea and Indonesia , as well as to textile handicrafts in Gujarat , northern Thailand and Japan . Specializing in art from the South Sea islands and textile techniques, he was appointed curator at the Museum für Völkerkunde in Basel in 1938 , which has been a museum of cultures since 1996 . In 1950 he was elected director, in 1964 he resigned from this position.

Alfred Bühler completed his habilitation in 1944 in the subject of ethnology at the University of Basel. There he was appointed associate professor in 1950 and first full professor of ethnology in 1959, and in 1970 he retired from university. Bühler made a special contribution to the development of a comprehensive technological textile collection in the Museum of Ethnology and in 1969 the processing and publication of the South Sea collection of the Museum Rietberg . In the function of chairman of the Swiss Society for Folklore from 1943 to 1946, he was primarily responsible for the beginning of farmhouse research. His estate is in the Museum of Cultures.
