Alfred Bozi

Alfred Bozi (born December 26, 1857 in Bielefeld ; † May 5, 1938 ibid) was a district judge in Bielefeld and most recently a lawyer, intensive judicial reformer and advocate of the empirical method or the scientific way of thinking in law and legal education. He is considered to be the inventor of the concept of rehabilitation of offenders. He was also active in local politics.

Career

Bozi was the son of Carl Bozi , the founder of the Vorwärts spinning mill in Bielefeld, where he attended high school and graduated from high school on Easter 1878. After studying law at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau and Berlin , he passed the legal trainee examination in 1881. Following his assessor examination in Berlin-Mitte in 1887, he worked as a court assessor a. a. in Bottrop . On June 1, 1892, he was appointed magistrate in Leer in East Frisia .

In the autumn of 1893 he became a district judge in Aurich and at the beginning of 1900 moved to the Bielefeld district court as a judge . Based on his practical experience, he strove to reform the judiciary.

From June 1, 1902, Bozi was an assistant judge at the Hamm Higher Regional Court and after 2 years was appointed to the Hamm Higher Regional Court on June 4, 1904. In the meantime, the highest authorities are taking offense at the efforts to reform the judiciary.

At the beginning of February 1911, Alfred Bozi received the post of magistrate in Bielefeld and in the same year obtained his doctorate at the Faculty of Law in Münster with his dissertation on the principles of law .

In 1915 he founded the Central Office for Social Judicial Assistance in Bielefeld. As early as 1907 he called for the transfer of judicial assistance, which had previously only existed in juvenile prison systems, to normal jurisdiction. After the end of the war, he promoted his idea to authorities and courts on behalf of the German Society for Social Law .

In April 1924 Bozi had reached the age limit for civil service, but afterwards worked as a lawyer .

Bozi was buried in the Johannisfriedhof in Bielefeld .

The Alfred-Bozi-Straße in Bielefeld

In 1950, a street in his hometown of Bielefeld was named after him, more precisely only the side of a main street leading out of town from the central Jahnplatz. Previously the street was called Hindenburgstrasse; the opposite side of the street is called Oberntorwall.
